In their push for the immediate resignation of Seuku Konneh, the Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Liberia (UL), the Student Unification Party (SUP) has continued its protests on campus.
On Monday, April 28, 2025, SUP members disrupted classes in an effort to intensify pressure on Mr. Konneh to step down. With the university set to administer final exams starting May 12, 2025, tensions escalated when clashes erupted between the Liberia National Police and SUP supporters, led by Chairman Kwein W. Kwein. The confrontations included stone-throwing and the use of tear gas.
The SUP has declared Mr. Konneh a wanted figure and warned him to avoid the university campus. Members accuse him of acting as a pawn for the administration to intimidate students by blocking the ID numbers of student leaders and suspending them.
Speaking on behalf of the students, the Unification Party Chairman for recruitment claimed that Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman had detained Kwein W. Kwein since 5 a.m. on Sunday and that he is suffering greatly. He issued a three-day ultimatum for the release of the SUP chairman.
“The Boakai administration will be held accountable by the Student Unification Party, under Chairman Kwein. We will continue to inform international partners about the police’s ongoing brutality against peaceful students at the state-run university. Seuku, who has been used as a tool by the administration, should resign immediately. Mr. Boakai is undermining both the legislature and education,” he stated.
He also announced that the university will be off-limits to President Boakai and warned that any attempts to arrest the SUP chairman, which could spark further chaos, would prompt the full response of the Student Unification Party.By Prince Baysah-Intern
