The Chinese Government has donated several medical supplies to the Ministry of Health to enhance maternal and child healthcare in Liberia. The donation to the Ministry of Health includes: 22 delivery beds, 33 baby cradles, and 15 infant warmers for rural clinics battling high maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
Speaking at the donation ceremony, Chinese Ambassador Yin Chengwu said the donation will be allocated to clinics in various remote areas across the country, aiming to provide a safer delivery environment for expectant mothers and safeguard the health of the newborns.
“It is hoped that these supplies will bring tangible benefits to the people at the grassroots level. In Liberia, the health sector is confronting many challenges, one of which is the maternal and child health and to address the challenges, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai prioritized the health issue and included it in his national development agenda and as a partner, China is committed to supporting the efforts of Liberian Government in enhancing people’s well-being,” the Chinese Ambassador said.
He said the supplies are a concrete implementation of China’s commitments under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in the health sector, and serve as a vivid reflection of the profound friendship between the two nations.
Ambassador Chengwu stated that the Chinese government firmly believes maternal and child health is a fundamental cornerstone of public health, which in turn serves as a crucial foundation for socioeconomic development, a key hallmark of social progress and civilization, and a common aspiration of the general public.
He said they will support the efforts of the Liberian government to enhance the health and well-being of its people. He further said China remains a responsible partner in the international community and they stand ready to work with Liberia to address health challenges. The Chinese Ambassador expressed hope that the supplies will serve as an opportunity to deepen practical cooperation with the Liberian side in broader areas in the future. For her part, Health Minister, Dr. Louise M. Kpoto, hailed the gesture as “a most needed gift,” stressing that the supplies will drastically reduce preventable deaths in underserved communities.
