President Joseph N. Boakai has pledged support towards maintaining high educational standards at the fast-growing Margibi University. Speaking Saturday, February 22, 2025 at the third graduation ceremony of the Margibi University in Harbel City, Margibi County, Boakai said the university can be assurance of his government’s support in continuously seeking the collaboration of local and international partners, including corporations such as Firestone and China Union, to ensure that Margibi University remains well-resourced for effective teaching and learning.
The President charged the graduates to strive to reach their full potential and to set ambitious goals, work tirelessly toward them, and never settle for mediocrity.
“As the Good Book says, “From whom much is given, much is expected.” Much has been given to you through your education. Now, much is expected of you. It is time to go forth and uplift Liberia,” he said.
The Liberian leader urged the graduates to always express gratitude to those who have supported them along the way to include parents, guardians, teachers, mentors, and friends; stating that they have played an important role in helping them reach their milestone.
He said challenges are not unique to any one person; whether rich or poor, everyone faces them. But it is how one confronts challenges, stays focused, and remains committed to their goals that will determine success, calling on the graduates to surround themselves with mentors, seek guidance when needed, and always strive to be their best.
“The challenges you face in life should not define you. What defines you is how you respond to those challenges. You have the power to turn obstacles into opportunities. The key is perseverance, a positive mindset, and a relentless pursuit of progress,” he said. Boakai said the leadership the graduates will provide is also important, as the world today is marked by uncertainty and transformation, yet full of possibilities.
President Boakai, “Earning your degree places you in a unique position to help lead Liberia into a future that is prosperous and just.”
“Your graduation today is more than a personal achievement; it is also a milestone in the ongoing development of Margibi University, and indeed, the education system of Liberia. The knowledge and skills you have acquired here are expected to serve as a foundation for your contribution to the public good,” the president said.
He said his government and partners must continue to invest in and strengthen the institution, and do the same for all higher education institutions across the country to ensure they maintain and surpass the highest standards. He said that is why the government must be cautious about the proliferation of institutions claiming university status.
President Boakai said the accreditation of educational institutions as universities should be a thorough process, grounded in clear, well-defined criteria. “The mushrooming of substandard universities in this country must be addressed head-on by the Ministry of Education and the National Commission on Higher Education because it is unjust and undermines the development of the country. The children of this country deserve the best,” he said.
The Liberian leader also commended the administration and faculty of university for what he described as a “work well done” and urged them to continue the work toward achieving their mission in the years to come.
