President Joseph N. Boakai has appointed J. Cyrus Saygbe, Sr., as Director General of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), elevating him from his role as Acting Director General after months of steering the agency through key reforms. According to an Executive Mansion release dated January 4, 2025, Saygbe has served in an acting capacity since May 2025, following the suspension of Ms. Emma Glasco.
During that period, he led initiatives aimed at strengthening Liberia’s fisheries and aquaculture sector, promoting sustainable fishing practices, and improving regulatory compliance across the industry.
Announcing the decision, President Boakai expressed confidence in Mr. Saygbe’s leadership and experience, noting that his confirmation will help consolidate gains already made, boost productivity, and support national economic development. The President also called on stakeholders in the fisheries and aquaculture sector to rally behind Mr. Saygbe as the government intensifies efforts to sustainably manage and grow Liberia’s aquatic resources. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Liberian Senate.
