Authorities Heighten Cross-Border Surveillance …Amid Increase In MPox Cases

The Chair of the Incident Management System (IMS) for the Mpox Virus and Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, led a high-level delegation to the Bo Waterside Border Crossing Point.

The visit aimed to assess ongoing public health interventions and strengthen border surveillance measures in response to the recent upsurge in Mpox cases, with at least twenty five active cases in the country.

During the visit, the delegation held joint discussions with Port Health staff from both Liberia and Sierra Leone, as well as members of the Joint Security Forces, to explore strategies for enhancing cross-border surveillance and coordination. Dr. Nyan, on behalf of the Minister of Health, Dr. Louise Kpoto, commended the Port Health teams and the Joint Security personnel for their unwavering commitment and dedication.

He emphasized the critical need to reinforce Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures as part of efforts to curb the transmission of the virus. Dr. Nyan presented assorted IPC and Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) materials to the Sierra Leonean Port Health team to support this effort. The visiting delegation included the County Health Officer of Grand Cape Mount, the County Surveillance Officer, the Director of Health Promotion at the Ministry of Health, the Deputy Director General for Technical Services at NPHIL, and other senior officials.
