With a recent report of four active Monkeypox Viral Infection cases in the country, our attention is drawn to this looming threat that could destabilize the nation if necessary care is not taken, recognizing the need for all hands to be on deck.

It can be recalled the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (HPHIL), through its Director General Dugbe Chris Nyah, disclosed that Liberia has four active Monkey Pox Virus (MPox) cases in Liberia, including one involving popular Liberian comedian, Jabateh.

Speaking Sunday, May 18, 2025, at NPHIL Headquarters in Congo Town, the NPHIL DG said that Montserrado County has recorded two active cases, while Margibi County and Sinoe reported one each.

According to him, when the news of Comedian Jabateh was reported, NPHIL immediately sent its team to collect samples for testing. Out of the many samples collected, four were tested positive, which brought the total active Mpox cases to four.

He revealed that the victim is currently in the Mpox treatment unit undergoing treatment, with plans underway to vaccinate those who came in contact with him.

In view of this latest development, we hereby call the attentions of the Government to see this as a potential threat to the wellbeing of the citizens and nation at large, and take all necessary steps to avert this looming danger.

In the main time, we join the National Public Health Institute of Liberia to urge the public to not panic as it is doing everything possible to stop the spread of the deadly virus. However, we plead with citizens to follow all health protocols that guide against the transmission of the virus.

We believe that if everyone works together, the virus can be contained and further speared of the infection can be stopped. This is not a time to play carelessness, both on the part of citizens and Government of Liberia, especially the Ministry of Health and

NPHIL.   Mpox is caused by the monkeypox virus, a viral ailment that primarily spreads between humans through close contact.

Transmission can also occur through contaminated surfaces or objects that have been in contact with an infected individual. In areas where the monkeypox virus is endemic among wildlife, there is potential for zoonotic transmission, meaning the virus can jump from animals to humans.
