Following years of existence, the Assemblies of God Liberia (AGL) has officially launched a full-fledged first-class Christian University to be called “The Assemblies of God University (AGU) in Liberia. The University is located in Brewerville City outside Monrovia.

The establishment of the university came when the leadership of the General Executives, headed by Rev. Dr. Abenda F. Tamba, Bishop of the AG Church in Liberia, on March 16, 2022, appointed a seventeen (17) member Organizing Strategic Planning Committee to work out modalities to elevate and operate the current AG Bible College in Brewerville into a university.

Speaking at the launch Thursday, April 25, 2024 in Monrovia, Jarlawah A. Tonpo, Co-Chair of the Steering Committee said the committee was also mandated to develop a strategic plan leading to the establishment of the AGU with a term of reference.

According to Tonpo, those references include Asset identification and management plan of the Church and the Bible College, Research and identify courses to be offered, Curriculum development; design a legal framework for the University, develop a financial mobilization and management plan as well as
recruitment and labor policy and develop a marketing mechanism.

“Two weeks after, on the 29 of March 2022, the committee was able to develop a five-year work plan that evolved around the Motto: Vision, Mission, Core value, and objectives of the A.G University with the motto “Study to show thyself approved,” he explained.

The Co-chair stated that the A.G University under the auspices of the Assemblies of God Church in Liberia, will be committed to educate the society to the levels of undergraduate education, through rigorous research, planning, and scholarly development of the whole person.

For his part, the President of the University, Rev. Dr. Jimmy B. Kuah said on November 1, 2023, the college graciously received the approval of the National Commission on Higher Education to operate, offer,
and award bachelor’s degrees.

“Today, we are delighted to announce to the student population of Liberia and the general public, that the Assemblies of God University is set and ready to begin operation in September, 2024,” Rev. Kuah said.

Kuah indicated that as of September, the University will operate three Colleges which include the College of Bible and Theology, College of Business and College of Education and Liberal Arts, with commitment to gradually add
other colleges.

According to the President of the University, the general emphases of the university will be on research, transferability of knowledge to real life situations, and moral discipline.
He added that the University will continue to receive applications for instructional staff from now to August.

“All applications should be submitted at the First Assemblies of God Church on Carey and Buchanan Streets or at our main Campus in Brewerville,” Dr. Kuah explained.

Giving the background of the project, he said having proven the strength and quality in tertiary education for over 40 years, the General Assembly of the Assemblies of God Liberia, comprising all ordained ministers, all licensed ministers, and delegates representing approximately 600 churches, gathered at Zion AG Church in Upper Caldwell in January 2020 and unanimously passed a resolution to elevate the Bible College to a university level.

“With the passing of the resolution, the church began the tedious process of seeking the approval of the National Commission on Higher Education,” Dr. Kuah narrated.

The President of the school said that the Assemblies of God University (AGU), is a Christian institution committed to educate the society at the levels of undergraduate and postgraduate education through rigorous research, planning, and scholarly development of the whole person.
