President Joseph N. Boakai describes the celebration of the 68th Armed Forces Day of Liberia as a reflection on the extraordinary contributions of the military, whose unwavering commitment and patriotism have been the bedrock of the nation’s defense.
Speaking Tuesday, February 11, 2025 during the Armed Forces Day ceremony at the BTC Barracks in Monrovia, Boakai said it was through the tireless efforts of the men and women in arms that the country enjoys peace and stability. According to him, the intent of the celebration is to honor and celebrate the bravery, dedication, and sacrifice of military personnel.
“As we celebrate this significant day, we must also acknowledge the challenges facing our Armed Forces. Issues such as inadequate housing resulting in overcrowdedness of existing military barracks, inadequate budgetary allocation for recruitment, training, welfare and other pressing needs have posed substantial obstacles,” he said. The Liberian leader said addressing these challenges is crucial for the continued strength, effectiveness and preparedness of the army.
Boakai said his government has committed to working tirelessly to improve the living conditions, training, and resources available to military personnel, and is exploring various avenues to ensure that the AFL is well-equipped and adequately supported to meet the demands of the critical role it plays.
The Liberian said it was in this regard that the government commenced, and will continue the renovation of existing military barracks around the country, to ease the problem of congestion at the Edward Binyah Kesselly and other functional barracks.
“Additionally, while efforts are being made to renovate the Todee Military Barracks and restore it to its pre-war status, I am instructing the Minister of Defense to partner with relevant and line entities to assess military facilities in Harper, Maryland County, Sanniquelle, Nimba County and in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, to begin renovation of those barracks,” he said.
Boakai acknowledged the partnerships and support from international allies, which according to him, have been instrumental in enhancing the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Liberia. He said collaborative efforts and shared resources will continue to play a pivotal role in overcoming challenges and advancing the national defense agenda.
“To the gallant men and women of the Armed Forces of Liberia, I want to extend my deepest gratitude for your service. Your bravery and dedication inspire us all,” President Boakai said.
The president told the men and women in arm that the country stands with them in solidarity and support as they guard the borders, protect the airspace, and secure the waters.
He said Liberians must always remember the sacrifices made by those who have served before, and honor their memory by continuing to uphold the values of courage, integrity, and patriotism.
