The Plenary of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, voted on the 2022 Population Census to increase the total number of seats to 87, with the addition of fourteen new districts. The decision was taken following a report from the House Committee on Elections, Inauguration, and Judiciary.

The new 14 districts or seats will be added to the current 73 districts. Montserrado County will get four additional seats, while Nimba and Bong counties will each receive two new seats. Grand Gedeh, Lofa, and Margibi counties are set to get one seat each. The 2022 Population Census conducted by the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS) revealed a population of 5.25 million, showing significant growth since the last census.

With males slightly outnumbering females (50.4% vs 49.6%) and a 2.8% annual growth rate, the release of the report provided crucial demographic data for planning, although it faced initial delays and some credibility questions regarding data variations and political implications for redistricting.

Key findings show the total population is approximately 5.25 million (5,248,621), gender split of 50.4% male, 49.6% female, and an annual growth rate of about 2.8 between 2008 and 2022, while the most populous counties include Montserrado, Nimba, Bong, Lofa, Margibi, and Grand Bassa.
