A group of women and girls has petitioned the United Nations to intervene in the growing number of rape cases in Liberia. ‎Reading the petition on behalf of the group in Monrovia on November 17, 2025, Juren Korlu Morlu said the lack of action by the Government of Liberia to protect victims and bring perpetrators to justice continues to see a justice system that works for powerful people but not for the poor and weak.

‎According to her, more than 2,000 rape and sexual violence cases have been left without answers, adding, “Files disappear, cases are dropped. Victims are told to stay silent. The abusers walk around freely because of their connections and their political power, as many of these victims, like Maya, Lorpu, Dennesse, Princess, Christine, Roberta, Janjay, Kula, and Favor, are left unheard and thousands of other girls who have been ignored only because the government is playing politics with the future of these young victims.”

She claims that the 14-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped by a Deputy Minister, is being ignored while the victim suffers quietly.  She alleges that the Minister still goes to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and even mocks her father, who is just a simple security officer.

‎In their petition, the group under the banner of Women and Girls of Liberia is calling on the United Nations to step in. They want the UN to begin an independent investigation into why rape cases are not being prosecuted.

“Put public pressure on the government to punish all abusers. Protect survivors from threats and government interference. Hold any official accountable when they try to block justice,” they petitioned the UN. ‎ ‎Receiving the petition on behalf of the United Nations Office, Shirke Fahbullah, Head of Security, assured the group that the petition would be delivered to the appropriate authority. He called on the women to exercise patience; Joseph Sirleaf writes.
