As police officers face repeated attacks from citizens, Deputy Inspector General of Police Nelson Freeman has urged members of the public to refrain from actions that endanger officers’ lives. He warned that any such action would provoke a similar response in accordance with the “Use of Force Continuum.”
Freeman emphasized that police officers are human beings, just like everyone else, and citizens should stop taking actions that put their lives at risk. Speaking on Monday, October 13, 2025, during the Sky FM 50-50 Radio Talk Show, Freeman explained that the “Use of Force Continuum” is a framework that guides law enforcement officers on when and how to apply force in various situations.
His comments came in response to a series of attacks on police officers, including a recent incident in which three officers were injured by a man believed to be mentally ill in the Congo Town area. Freeman expressed frustration that individuals familiar with global police operations often take to social media to criticize law enforcement for using force against citizens.
He stated that if officers face a threat, they will neutralize it and will not wait to be harmed, as has occurred in some recent cases. He affirmed that law enforcement will take necessary actions to ensure that civilians do not lose their lives while police are present. He also reminded the public that police officers are individuals with families, serving their country.
Freeman acknowledged that there are “bad apples” within the police force but assured that they do not hide these issues; instead, they take action against inappropriate behavior. He mentioned that he often receives complaints about police officers from citizens on motorcycles and other groups.
He highlighted the robustness of the Professional Standards Division, which ensures that those who violate individuals’ rights are held accountable, with reports made public through social media channels. Cllr. Freeman urged the public to utilize the Professional Standards Division to report any officer who acts outside the law.
