On September 3, the grand gathering to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War was solemnly held in Beijing. 61 foreign leaders, senior representatives of relevant countries, heads of international organizations attended the event.

It was a historic gathering to remember history, honor the fallen heroes, cherish peace and create a better future.

80 years ago, the entire Chinese people, including the compatriots in Taiwan, fought with indomitable courage and made enormous sacrifices, forging the great victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. One of the most important outcomes of the victory was the restoration of Taiwan to China. 80 years ago, the Allies, including China and Liberia, won the great victory of the World Anti-Fascist War through arduous struggles, and established an international system with the United Nations at its core. Both the founding of the United Nations and the return of Taiwan to China are important fruits of the World Anti-Fascist War.

Today, transformations of the world unseen in a century are unfolding at a faster pace. Changes of the world, of our times, and of the historical trajectory are taking place in ways like never before. The hard-won victorious outcomes of the World Anti-Fascist War are now facing erosion. We must learn from history and firmly safeguard the outcomes of victory won by the peoples of the world at the cost of their blood and lives.

Over the past 80 years since Taiwan’s return to China, the international community’s commitment to the one-China principle has grown increasingly consolidated. At the same time, however, certain countries continuously attempt to distort, obscure and hollow out the one-China principle—deliberately distorting facts and misleading the public. Some have gone so far as to claim that the so-called Treaty of San Francisco took the place of the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, trumpeting the notion that Taiwan’s status is undetermined. Some deliberately distort and challenge the UNGA Resolution 2758. In recent years, the Democratic Progressive Party authorities in Taiwan have been hellbent on the separatist stance of “Taiwan independence,” pursuing “independence” by seeking foreign support and military buildup. Their reckless actions are nothing but an attempt to change the fact that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one and the same China. Such moves gravely endanger peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and severely harm the interests and well-being of compatriots in Taiwan. Yet, no matter what rhetoric the separatist forces employ, or how they try to twist the narrative, they cannot change the status and fact that Taiwan is part of China. The Chinese government and people have full confidence and ample capability to safeguard the shared homeland of the Chinese nation. No matter how the situation on the Taiwan island evolves or what troubles external forces may make, the historical trend toward China’s ultimate and inevitable reunification is unstoppable.

Over the past 80 years since the founding of the United Nations, it has upheld global stability and prosperity amid turbulent international circumstances, and has driven significant advances in human civilization. Yet today, certain country is pushing an agenda of “me-first” and employing power politics and bullying, attempting to replace multilateralism with unilateralism, and to substitute the postwar international order with so-called “rules of its own making.” Such actions have subjected the United Nations to unprecedented challenges. As Chinese President Xi Jinping pointed out, the more turbulent and complex the international situation becomes, the more we must uphold and defend the authority of the United Nations. The various confrontations and injustices in the world today did not occur because the purposes and principles of the UN Charter are outdated, but because they are not effectively maintained and implemented. Liberia has been successfully elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the term 2026–2027. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China stands ready to work together with Liberia to firmly uphold the central role of the UN, enabling that all countries, regardless of size and strength, to take part in decision-making, enjoy their rights and play their roles as equals in the process toward multipolarity.

History will gradually back away, but the inspirations and lessons drawn from history will remain a shared spiritual wealth for humanity. Forgetting history means to betray it. The outcomes of victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War have remained indisputable, and the sacrifices made by hundreds of millions of people in the pursuit of independence, freedom, and peace can never be denied. May all countries draw greater wisdom and strength from history, and work together to build a peaceful world and a future full of hope!
