The Head Office of Ecobank Liberia on 11th Street in Sinkor was a place of panic during the morning hours of Wednesday, August 6, 2025, when a man identified as Emery Johnson, who pretended to be a customer, entered the banking hall and launched what appeared to be a robbery attack on one of the tellers.
According to eyewitnesses, who had gone to the bank to transact business, the suspected robber entered the bank’s premises with a backpack containing a can of pepper spray.
A security guard at the bank said the incident occurred in the private banking section when the suspect used pepper spray on a female teller, who wasted no time activating the alarm bell that claimed the attention of other employees. There was no cash taken away or property damage reported.
However, a teller was reportedly sprayed in the face, thus sustaining injury, as the Liberia National Police responded in time and arrested the suspect. He is currently in police custody and undergoing preliminary investigations.
Meanwhile, the Bank has issued a statement citing regret of the “unfortunate incident that occurred at our Head Office Branch, precisely Private Banking Lounge, 11th Street Sinkor, on 6th August 2025, where an armed man tried robbing the Teller of the lounge.”
The Management of Ecobank said they are deeply concerned about this incident and are actively working with local law enforcement agencies to ensure a comprehensive investigation, adding that the safety and security of customers and staff remain their utmost priority. The Bank reassured all that it has taken immediate steps to enhance security at all its branches, understanding that such incidents may raise concerns regarding safety and security.
“We, therefore, wish to reassure all our customers that robust security systems and protocols are in place to protect their funds and personal information. Our operations continue uninterrupted across all branches and digital channels. We appreciate the understanding and continued support of our customers and the public during this time,” the bank’s Managing Director, Salamata Diallo, stated.
