Embattled House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa has disclosed that he is currently engaging in consultations with stakeholders nationwide, as well as with members from both sides of the ongoing leadership impasse in the House of Representatives. This statement was released on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
In the statement, Cllr. Koffa addressed recent comments circulating on social media and other platforms that have made insinuations regarding his position as Speaker. He expressed his gratitude for the concern shown for his well-being and the integrity of the Speaker’s Office, but felt it necessary to clarify these matters with transparency.
Speaker Koffa emphasized that the laws of the nation should serve as the ultimate foundation for resolving disputes, including the current legislative impasse. He noted that the Supreme Court’s recent ruling has definitively resolved this issue, and he fully respects and upholds the Court’s decision.
“In light of this, I am actively engaging in consultations with stakeholders across the country, including colleagues from all sides of the legislature, regarding my transition from the position and to determine the appropriate path forward,” the statement read.
In the meantime, the Speaker has committed to keeping the public informed as these discussions progress. He urged citizens to refrain from spreading unsubstantiated claims that could foster unnecessary confusion or division.
It is worth recalling that the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 23, 2025, declared Speaker J. Fonati Koffa to be the legitimate Speaker of the House of Representatives and deemed the actions of the Majority Bloc, led by Representative Richard Nagbe Koon, unconstitutional.
Despite the Court’s ruling, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has stated that his administration will continue to collaborate with House members who meet the constitutional quorum necessary to conduct legislative business. This statement appeared to open the door for significant lobbying between both sides of the crisis, leading to at least five of Koffa’s loyalists crossing over to the Majority Bloc.
