Since the landmark opinion rendered by the Supreme Court of Liberia in the Bill of Information filed by embattled Speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa to get clarity of the previous ruling in the House of impasse, the nation’s highest court has received commendations from individuals and organizations from different spheres of society.

Among the latest to do so is Dr. Joshua Tom Turner, a former Presidential candidate in the 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections on the ticket of the New Liberia Party (NLP).

Turner, in a statement issued a day following what he termed as a major decision by the Supreme Court, stated that this opinion does only provide clarity to the tussle over speakership at the National Legislature, but also serves as the foundation for peace and stability, which is the driving force behind investments and development in a nation.

The ruling, according to him, is a significant step towards building a framework for the rule of law and setting a precedent that will serve as a deterrent for potential misconduct.

“We must give due credit to Madame Chief Justice and her fellow justices for their remarkable decision. Their unwavering commitment to upholding justice and the rule of law is truly commendable. This ruling is not just a victory for the judicial system, but for the entire nation as well,” noted Dr. Turner.

“Justice is not a one-dimensional concept; it has many layers to it. As citizens, we must also have a balanced view of justice, understanding that there are two sides to every coin. It is not just about punishing wrongdoers, but also about ensuring fairness and equality for all,” he indicated.

In this regard, the Liberian politician and clergyman urged lawmakers to recognize their own role in the lawmaking process, and as such, they must have a responsibility to be the champions of those laws.

On the other hand, he urged the Executive Branch of Government to put aside party lines and prioritize the sanctity of the country’s peace and democracy by enforcing the highest court’s decision.

He maintained that the ruling by the final arbiter of justice in the land is a testament to the country’s progress towards becoming a just and democratic society, adding that it sends a strong message to the rest of the world that Liberia is committed to upholding the principles of justice and the rule of law.

“Moreover, it is worth noting that justice is not just a moral obligation, but it also has tangible benefits for a nation. When justice is served, it creates an environment of trust and stability, which is crucial for attracting investment and promoting development. No one wants to invest in a country where the rule of law is not upheld, and justice is not served.”

“As we move forward, let us continue to uphold the values of democracy, peace, and justice. Let us be proud of our country’s progress and remain vigilant in protecting the rights and freedoms of our citizens. The ruling of the Supreme Court should serve as a reminder that we are on the right track, and with a strong commitment to justice, we can achieve sustainable development and prosperity for all.”

Among other things, Dr. Turner reminded Liberians to place justice at the fulcrum of democracy and the bedrock of peace and stability. “It is the platform for investments and developments, and without it, a nation cannot thrive. Therefore, let us all join hands in upholding justice, and together we can build a brighter future for Liberia. God bless Liberia and may the light of his countenance shine on us.”
