Memorializing The Ebola Dead…NPHIL Issues Health Safety Measures For Disco Cemetery

It has been barely 10 years since the end of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) that claimed nearly 6,000 precious lives of Liberians; hence, families of those who lost their lives in that pandemic will join other Liberians to pay homage to their loved ones during the official celebration of Decoration Day on tomorrow, Wednesday, March 12, 2024. In so doing, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has ordered the Disco Hill Ebola Victim Burial Cemetery for the regular cleaning exercise.

Like any grave sites across the country, the Disco Hill Ebola Victim Burial Cemetery, which is situated along the Roberts International Airport (RIA),   will be opened to the public (visitors) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but with serious public health restrictions. NPHIL, in a circular issued on Monday, March 10, 2025, outlined a six-count guidelines to families and visitors at the historic infamous grave site.

“In commemoration of Decoration Day on March 12, 2025, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) informs the public that the Disco Hill Ebola Victim Burial Cemetery, located on the Roberts International Airport (RIA) Highway, will be opened to the public (visitors) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This will allow family members the opportunity to honor and decorate the graves of their loved ones,” said the circular.

According to NPHIL, visitors are asked to maintain a respectful and peaceful environment, as loud noises, fighting, or disruptive behavior are strictly prohibited. Also, the NPHIL has barred photography and videography at the site, while at the same time prohibiting smoking and drinking alcohol is strictly prohibited within the cemetery grounds.

“Any lost and found items should be handed over to cemetery staff for proper documentation. Children below 10 years are not allowed. We appreciate your cooperation in preserving the dignity of this solemn occasion,” added the circular.
