President Joseph N. Boakai recently dedicated a US$250,000 Mini-Water Supply System in Gbarpolu County, a project executed by the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC). During the ceremony held on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, President Boakai urged the residents of the county to take care of the project and use it wisely.
He mentioned that there is a common perception that Liberians struggle with maintenance. To counter this notion, he encouraged the citizens to help change this negative image by diligently maintaining the new water supply system. “I trust that you will do this, and you will reap the full benefits. Together, we will continue to build a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous Liberia,” he said.
Boakai said the dedication of this water supply system is just the beginning and expressed his commitment to expanding access to clean water, not only in Bopolu, but across all counties in Liberia.
He said many plans are in place to enhance infrastructure and improve the health of the Bopolu and Gbarpolu communities. The President said this system is the first of its kind in Bopolu; while it may not yet serve the entire city, it represents a significant step forward.
He was particularly pleased to announce that the installation of the water system was fully funded by the Liberian government. The president said residents and businesses within the pipe network area can register with the LWSC to connect to clean and safe drinking water.
He highlighted that the benefits of the project extend beyond convenience; it will help reduce the time and physical effort spent fetching water, allowing women and children to engage in more productive activities.
Most importantly, he stressed that the water installation will help prevent the spread of deadly waterborne diseases, contributing to a healthier community and reducing medical expenses for families.
The President expressed his deep appreciation to the management and staff of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation for their leadership in making the project a reality.
He also recognized the Gbarpolu County Administration and the Legislative Caucus for their support and commitment to improving the lives of the citizens. “This is what leadership is about—working together to bring real solutions to our communities,” he noted.
Boakai reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that safe drinking water and improved sanitation standards are upheld for all Liberians, regardless of their location. He described the water project as a testament to the long-standing commitment to decentralization, which involves the devolution of powers and services to all segments of society.
