Just a day after the controversial Speaker of the 55th Legislature, Richard N. Koon, allegedly ordered LNP officers and an unidentified individual to drill and forcibly open the car door of Montserrado County District #10 Representative Yekeh Kolubah, citizens have described the action as an “act of lawlessness.”
Speaking to our reporter Wednesday, February 19, 2025 in Monrovia, some citizens said while the action of Representative Kolubah to have parked his car in the space reserved for the Speaker was wrong, the Speaker should not have taken the law in his hands; stating that Liberia is a country of law.
“The action of Representative Koon is lawless; he should not have taken the law into his hands. Speaker Koon is a leader and an instructor at the University of Liberia; he should have behaved and led by example,” Elijah Sackie explained.
Also, Emmanuel Daniels said that the best thing Speaker Koon could have done was to invite his colleague and have a dialogue, adding that violence is not the way forward.
“What was the essence of calling a tow truck after taking the law in his hands; something he should have done to avoid violence? A leader should always behave like a leader,” Emmanuel narrated.
According to reports, the vehicle was parked in a slot traditionally reserved for the Speaker. Speaker Koon, who represents Montserrado County District #11, allegedly ordered its removal to make space for his own vehicle.
Under the supervision of LNP officers, an unidentified individual used a drill to forcibly open the car door, after which a police officer entered the vehicle and attempted to disengage the handbrake to facilitate its removal.
After the dramatic incident, Representative Kolubah accused Speaker Koon of orchestrating the break-in.
Speaking with the media, the District #10 Representative said, “If I go to the court and can’t get redress from the court to bring all my things that went missing from my car, I will burst Richard Koon’s car.”
Also, Representative Thomas Goshua told journalists that he was on the scene when Speaker Koon ordered the drilling of Representative Kolubah’s vehicle.
“The car is owned by a lawmaker; whoever Richard thinks he is, he is just first amongst equals. What would have happened were he to call Honorable Kolubah and have a dialogue? But I was standing there when he issued an instruction, I was standing right there,” Representative Goshua stated.
He said, “Your burst this vehicle, open and push it anywhere you want to push it, and I am not here for that nonsense. The second instruction was, “if anybody does video, y’all should burst the camera.”
Representative Goshua added that the behavior of the Speaker also shows that he’s greedy for power. But Koon himself has not issued an official release on the matter, causing public speculation.
