The Liberian Senate on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 unanimously concurred with the House of Representatives to pass a crucial bill establishing the National Tourism Authority.
This new legislation paves the way for the creation of an independent body, removing the Tourism Department from the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) and granting it full autonomy.
The decision marks a long-awaited step toward strengthening the tourism industry in Liberia, allowing for more focused development and management.
The establishment of the National Tourism Authority is expected to boost the country’s tourism potential, attract investment, and improve the overall governance of the sector. It can be recalled that members of the House of Representatives voted on September 3, 2024, to pass the bill and forwarded it to the Senate for concurrence.
The Bill, titled, “An Act to Amend Title 30, Public Authorities Laws Liberian Code of Law Revised Establish in Lieu The Liberian National Tourism Authority,” was passed following recommendations contained in a report from the Joint Committee on Information, Broadcast, Culture and Tourism, Judiciary, and Internal Affairs. A series of public hearings was conducted amongst stakeholders and experts in the tourism sector.
