Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, Acting President of the University of Liberia, has disclosed that the university is set and ready to reopen on Monday, January 13, 2025. Speaking Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing in Monrovia, Dr. Conteh called on students to prepare themselves for the upcoming school year.
He said the opening of the school is not a politically driven statement because President Joseph Nyumah Boakai was strategic in his approach to have the school reopened by inviting top officials from other universities to discuss the way forward.
According to him, the opening of the university is one of the top agenda of the Government of Liberia to address the human resource issue of the youth of the country.
Meanwhile, Responding to critics about the appointment of an American as president of the university, Dr. Conteh said local experience has nothing to do with being a president of the University of Liberia.
He said the first two presidents of the university were African Americans, and Dr. Layli Maparyan has the transferable method to move the university forward.
According to him, with the new president, UL will be easy to enter and easy to leave, calling on Liberians to put their differences aside and look forward to the work ahead.
Currently, he said the university has approximately 22,000 students from all parts of the country, as well as foreign students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
