The Plenary of the Liberian Senate has taken a decision to reinforce a resolution emanating from the 54th Legislature, regarding compensation to families of victims involved in the sinking of the Niko Invanka vessel.
The Senate’s action was triggered by a communication written to Plenary by Senator Johnathan Sogbie of River Gee County, seeking clarification on the progress made in fulfilling the agreement contained in the resolution due to the sinking of the Nico invanka on July 17, 2021, while sailing from the Freeport of Monrovia to the port city of Harper, Maryland County.
According to the resolution, the Government of Liberia through the Liberia Maritime Authority and the National Port Authority shall in addition to the US$100, 000 initially contributed to the families of those who lost their lives, a contribution of additional US$20,000 should be paid to the family of each of the victims as compensation for their loss.
According to a Senate release, the resolution also states that the owners of Nico Invanka shall be made to participate fully in raising the necessary funds to compensate the victims’ families involved.
However, a motion proffered by Senator Abe Darious Dillion which states that the Senate endorses the resolution and further reinforces its mandate contained therein, ensuring that the compensation for victims be captured in the 2025 FY Budget to resolve the issue.
