The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has strongly condemned recent disruptions at the Capitol Building in Monrovia in attempts to oust current Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. In a release issued October 18, 2024, the ANC said the disruptions at the Capitol have cast a shadow over the democratic processes that form the bedrock of national governance.As a nation, Liberia stands at a critical juncture where the integrity of its democratic institutions must be upheld with unwavering commitment.
“It is with profound concern that we address the allegations of bribery and inducements, specifically the disturbing reports of US$15,000 exchange, which have surfaced in the media to remove the Speaker, Fonati Koffa,” the party said.
While it is the prerogative of the House of Representatives to elect its own leaders, the ANC says this sacred exercise must be conducted with transparency, integrity, and respect for the rule of law; the very notion that such a process could be tainted by corruption is sickening to the core and speaks volumes about the challenges faced in eradicating corruption from our political landscape.
The ANC said it is concerned that one of its partisans is alleged to be a part of such fiasco and assures the public that his actions will be subjected to internal scrutiny. The party applauds the stance of our lawmakers, along with others, for resisting the temptation of bribery and withdrawing their signatures.
“Corruption is a cancer that eats away at the fabric of our society, yet eroding public confidence and stifling progress. It is a scourge that not only affects Liberia but has far reaching implications for the global community, including the taxpayers of the United States and other Nations of the World who support our development efforts,” the ANC said.
The ANC release said it is imperative that the country takes a firm stand against such malfeasance and public officials must account for funds allotted to them from taxes paid by ordinary Liberians. Therefore, the Alternative National Congress (ANC) has joined forces with other well-meaning Liberians to call for an impartial financial audit of the National Legislature.
The party has called upon the honorable members of the House of Representatives, those who remain steadfast in their commitment to justice and integrity, to denounce these shameful acts, saying it is time for the good men and women within our legislative body to rise above the fray, reject corruption in all its forms, and reaffirm their dedication to serving the people of Liberia with honor and distinction.
Furthermore, ANC urged the United States Government, as a key partner in Liberia’s development, to assist in ensuring that those found engaging in these disgraceful acts are held accountable through sanctions for corruption, serving as a deterrent to those who would seek to undermine the democratic processes for personal gain.
“While this issue may be rooted in Liberia, it is a global concern that demands a unified response. Together, we can forge a path forward that prioritizes transparency, accountability, and ethical governance. Let us seize this moment to inspire change, foster cooperation, and build a future that is free from the shackles of corruption,” the ANC said.
