President Joseph N. Boakai has called for a stronger partnership between Liberia and Canada; as Liberia’s development hinges on fruitful collaborations. Speaking September 19, 2024 at the 2024 Liberia Investment Forum 2024 in Toronto, Canada, President Boakai said Liberia’s progress in stabilizing its democracy and improving infrastructure is just the beginning.
The Liberian leader told the gathering that Liberia is on the path to economic transformation, and with the help of Canadian investors, the country will achieve its development goals.
According to him, Liberia’s recent political stability, expansion in infrastructure, and ambitious economic reforms make the country ripe for investment. Boakai said his government’s focus on key sectors of agriculture, mining, energy and tourism, reflects Liberia’s commitment to sustainable growth.
He said Liberia stands at a critical juncture where political stability and economic reforms are aligning to create a conducive environment for investment.
The President said Liberia is open for business, and the forum presents a unique opportunity for Canadian investors to come to Liberia and help develop the country. He said over the years, Liberia has witnessed significant improvements in road connectivity, particularly in rural areas, opening up new possibilities for trade and investment.
“We invite Canadian businesses to explore these untapped opportunities, especially in agriculture and infrastructure development,” he said.
President Boakai said Liberia’s mining sector has continued to attract international attention and companies like ArcelorMittal have already made significant investments in iron ore mining, contributing to job creation and infrastructure development.
“The mining sector, with its potential for iron ore, gold, and diamond extraction, remains a critical area for foreign investment. Canadian expertise can help us fully realize the potential of our mineral resources,” he said.
However, the president acknowledged Liberia’s challenges with power supply, but expressed optimism about the country’s future with the right partnerships. During the forum, President Boakai spoke on the critical role of the Liberians in Canada, saying they contribute not only to Liberia’s economy, but also to Canadian society.
