The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has disclosed a confirmed case of Monkeypox in Greenville, Sinoe County. Speaking Monday, September 2, 2024, NPHIL Director-General Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan indicated that a seven-year-old female in Sinoe County with no travel history has been confirmed with Monkeypox.
He further noted that in the last 24 hours, there were samples sent from Sinoe County about suspected eight cases on which follow-ups were made and one of the samples was active of the virus. He said the case is currently being managed while the entity is continuing follow-ups with those the affected patient came in direct contact with.
He said information reaching NPHIL through the County Health Officer that the mother of the affected child is showing symptoms of monkeypox while samples of three to four others are being investigated.
Dr. Nyan clarified that recent news which circulated on the internet about five confirmed cases of monkeypox in Sinoe County was fake. He said when they received the information, NPHIL immediately went on to assess the situation from the county level by contacting the county health officials and all concerned groups.
“We analyzed the information and saw it was all inaccurate, that all the five cases reported on the internet were all lies and that the health officers did not give any report to the media.
He said they will be visiting the various ports of entry namely the National Port Authority and Ganta Entry, and is working closely with the Ministry of Health and other partners to ensure that they end Monkeypox in the country. Meanwhile, Dr. Nyan has revealed that Nigeria has the most cases followed by Ivory Coast and Ghana, and the entity is concerned about the affected countries Liberia is surrounded by.
