The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) through its National Chairman Janga Augustus Kowo has described the presence of armed officers at the party’s headquarters as “unprovoked deployment.”

CDC partisans had gathered at their party headquarters on Monday, August 5, 2024, to apparently protest against the Government of Liberia over the arrests of some of its members who served as officials during the party’s six-year rule, but the area was being surrounded by a huge number of armed police officers.  Speaking with reporters during the showdown, Chairman Kowo said the party sees the deployment of police as a provocation.

CDC Chairman alleged that from the government’s action, it seems they are attempting to tamper with the peace of the country. He explained that the unprovoked deployment of police around the CDC Headquarters has the propensity to incite violence among citizens, saying, whatever happens, the Liberian Government will be held fully responsible.

The CDC Chairman told journalists that the action of the police at the CDC headquarters will be fully documented by means of camera. “People have the right to protect. There was no need for the LNP to surround the headquarters of CDC. For the police to deploy people here when there has been no movement, it speaks volume,” he said.

The CDC Chairman called on the Government of Liberia to withdraw the presence of the police from around their party headquarters. Meanwhile, Kowo has condemned the action of the police in the strongest terms; alleging that the intent of the police is to kill peaceful citizens, describing the entire act as dangerous.

He at the same time called the attention of the International Community, United States Government and ECOWAS to look into the action of the police.
