In a significant move highlighting the government’s commitment to justice and prison reform, Justice Minister, Cllr. Oswald Tweh, Sr. has embarked on a joint visit to the Gbarnga Regional Hub and Gbarnga Central Prison in Bong County. Minister Tweh’s visit is aimed at assessing the conditions of the facilities, engage with staff and lead justice actors and explore ways to improve the justice system in the region.

Cllr. Tweh met with officials of the Gbarnga Regional Hub, Mr. Golwee and Mr. Robert Nyan, to discuss strategies for enhancing access to justice, promoting legal awareness, and expanding support services for vulnerable populations in Liberia, especially Bong, Nimba and Lofa Counties where the project covers.

The Gbarnga Regional Hub service shares benefits, particularly with three counties, in maximizing the fight against crimes and significant quick responses involving Joint Security interventions by providing justice and security services, confidence patrol, response to incidents of civil disobedience, surveillance patrol and legal services.

During his visit, Minister Tweh also met with the Bong County Attorney, Jonathan N. Flomo, to discuss improving activities relating to the job. Atty. Flomo expressed gratitude and encouraged numerous visits from the Minister; adding that it would motivate and boost access to justice in those counties.

Minister Tweh emphasized on the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring fair and efficient legal processes for all citizens. Later, the delegation proceeded to the Gbarnga Central Prison, where they interacted with prison staff and heads, including Acting Prison Superintendent Madam Gbolomen K. Siakor.

The Minister underscored government’s commitment to improving living conditions within the correctional facility, providing a secure environment for inmates by enhancing high-security standards at the prison facilities and implementing measures to reduce overcrowding, thereby consciously considering the pre-trial detainees’ situation.

The joint visit to the Gbarnga Regional Hub and Gbarnga Central Prison served as a platform for dialogue, assessment, and collaboration towards fostering a more transparent, effective, and humane justice system in Bong County.

Cllr. Tweh’s presence underscored the government’s dedication aligned with the “ARREST Agenda” to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability within the country’s judicial institutions.
