The Liberian Senate will on Thursday, May 16, 2024 resumed the second quarter of the first session of the 55th Legislature.
The reconvening of the 2nd quarter is in consonance with the amended Act of the Legislature which sets the Legislative break into three quarters.
Members of the Senate returned on Capitol Hill following a two month recess, which commenced from March 15 to May 10, 2024.
The first quarter of the Liberian Senate witnessed the ushering in 10 new Senators, with four reelected Senators following their victory in the 2023 Presidential and Legislative elections.
Additionally, the first quarter commenced with the election of Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence as President Pro-tempore of the Senate.
With respect to its constitutional power, the Senate devoted most of the sittings of the first quarter to vet and confirm presidential nominees, along with the passage of the 2024 National Budget in order to pave the way for the proper functioning of the government.
During the second, members of the Liberian Senate will review and take legislative actions on pending legislations in committee room.
Some of the pending documents include the Presidential Transition Bill, An Act to amend title 30, Public Authorities Law, Liberia Codes of Law Revised to Establish the Liberian National Tourism Authority Act (LNTA), An Act to Repeal Chapter 25, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Title 12, Executive Law of 1972, Liberian Codes of Law Revised, To establish in its stead, A New Chapter 25 to be known as the Minister of Local Government amongst others.
