Former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah has accused Vice President Jeremiah K. Koung of instructing Judge Ousmane Feika to overturn a verdict of acquittal based on a baseless allegation of “jury misconduct.” The judge, however, found no evidence linking either Tweah or his lawyers to any misconduct.
In a Facebook post on Monday, July 20, 2026, former Finance Minister Tweah stated that over the past month, the government has been deadlocked over what many within the government and some justices on the Supreme Court consider an unprecedented overreach that could undermining the judiciary.
“These patriotic voices have warned the government that we cannot destroy the judiciary because of Samuel Tweah. He won his case, and it would be dangerous to overturn a jury verdict, especially when Abdullah Kamara’s verdict of acquittal was unanimous. This is a clear indication that the government is engaging in witch-hunting and cherry-picking in corruption cases,” he said.
In response, Vice President Koung allegedly told the justices and others involved that “winning the election is more important for their government than protecting the rule of law.” Tweah claimed to have intelligence indicating that the final decision was handed to Judge Feika last Thursday after lengthy discussions within the government following a national security assessment.
“Well, let’s see whether Judge Feika obeys the tyrannical order or upholds the judiciary and the rule of law in his ruling tomorrow, July 21, 2026,” Tweah remarked. He stressed that the upcoming ruling holds no significance since nine patriotic jurors have already delivered their verdict, declaring him a free man based on the evidence presented.
When that decision was announced in court, Tweah expressed his emotional response, celebrating the courage and patriotism of the jurors. He shed tears during a press conference, moved by the fact that nine ordinary Liberians could resist the pressures and coercion from a ‘monstrous and nefarious government.’
Tweah noted that Judge Feika has only one option: to issue his certificate of freedom tomorrow. If Judge Feika refuses, Tweah vowed not to submit to any “bogus political trial that violates his constitutional rights,” asserting his status as a free man while accusing the government of trying to portray him as a “criminal.” “Now they can see me as a freedom fighter,” he wrote.
“We in Liberia have ended autocracy. Such diabolical actions might have happened in the 1980s or 1990s when Liberia experienced autocratic governance, where the political wishes of presidents dictated the law. With the sacrifices of Gabriel Kpolleh, Jackson F. Doe, Tunia Richardson, and Weewee Debbah, among the hundreds of thousands of other martyrs, Liberians inaugurated a rule-based social and political order. Today, the law is greater than the whims of any president or vice president,” he said.
Tweah indicated that if Judge Feika or Chief Justice Gbeisay cannot resist the manipulations and interferences from Vice President Jeremiah Koung and others intent on plunging Liberia into chaos for their electoral advantage, he, Samuel D. Tweah, Jr., is more than capable of standing against such pressures.
The former finance minister emphasized that now that Liberians know he was falsely accused and is a free man, he welcomes this political fight, recognizing himself as a political target of the government. Meanwhile, the office of the Vice President was yet to respond to these allegations up to press time.
