Former Liberian international footballer Theo Weeks has announced the formation of a new political movement, the Congress of the Liberian People (COLP), while declaring his intention to contest Liberia’s 2029 presidential election.

Weeks, who became known nationally through his performances for Liberia’s Lone Star and professional football career abroad, says his transition into politics is driven by a desire to contribute to national transformation and youth leadership.

In a message released under the title “From the People’s President,” Weeks reflected on Liberia’s political history and called for what he described as a renewed national movement centered on justice, opportunity, and inclusion.

According to Weeks, Liberia has reached another defining period that requires a new generation of leadership and citizen participation. “Our generation must not remain silent while poverty, inequality, and hopelessness continue to affect our people,” he stated.

Weeks said the newly established Congress of the Liberian People (COLP) intends to focus on priorities including national unity, poverty reduction, equal opportunity, justice and fairness, youth participation in governance, and economic empowerment.

The former footballer emphasized that the movement seeks to mobilize Liberians around what he described as a shared vision for national progress. Addressing young people directly, Weeks encouraged greater civic engagement and participation in shaping Liberia’s future.

“To the young people of Liberia, the time has come for us to take responsibility for the destiny of our country,” he stated. He further argued that leadership should be guided by service, sacrifice, and accountability.

Weeks concluded his message by formally signaling his political intentions ahead of 2029 and positioning COLP as a platform focused on freedom, equality, and opportunity.

His announcement adds another name to Liberia’s evolving political conversation as public figures, political actors, and emerging movements begin positioning themselves ahead of future electoral cycles.

At this stage, the party’s organizational structure, registration process, and broader political agenda are expected to develop in the years leading to the next presidential election. For now, Theo Weeks’ move marks a notable transition from football into national politics—opening a new chapter in his public life.
