The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), headed by Commissioner/CEO Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr., joined a high-level Government of Liberia delegation and representatives of South Korean investment giant Make Group on a site identification visit to Edina, Grand Bassa County, on June 12, 2026. The visit forms part of efforts to establish a modern shipbuilding, dry-docking, and ship-recycling facility that is expected to significantly boost Liberia’s maritime sector and create thousands of jobs.

Leading the delegation, Minister of State Without Portfolio, Haja Mamakai Bility, described the proposed investment as a major step toward fulfilling President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s vision of creating sustainable employment opportunities for Liberians. She emphasized that the project has the potential to transform lives through economic empowerment and long-term development.

Make Group Chairman, Mr. James Juhee Han, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Liberia, pledging to provide both employment and technical training opportunities for young Liberians. Having worked in Liberia for more than two decades, Mr. Han said the company views Liberia as a second home and remains committed to working closely with local communities to ensure the success of the project.

Grand Bassa County Superintendent Karyou Johnson praised the initiative, describing it as a transformative opportunity for the county. He noted that Make Group has already demonstrated goodwill through investments in education and community development, including the renovation of the Edina Public School, strengthening confidence in the partnership between the company and local residents.

The proposed investment aligns with Liberia’s broader maritime and industrial development agenda and is expected to position Edina as a strategic maritime services hub in West Africa. With strong support from government officials, local leaders, and citizens, the project promises to deliver lasting economic growth, skills development, and sustainable opportunities for communities across Grand Bassa County and beyond.
