Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti has disclosed that Liberia will chair the United Nations Security Council in December 2026. Minister Nyanti made the statement on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, after a special Cabinet meeting with Vice President Jeremiah K. Koung on Liberia’s ongoing position at the Security Council. Liberia began its two‑year tenure on January 1, 2026, marking a major diplomatic milestone for the country.
Minister Nyanti said Liberia is performing strongly in its role as a non‑permanent member. She said the upcoming presidency places Liberia at the center of global decision‑making during a critical month on the Council’s calendar.
Making remarks at the opening of the meeting, Vice President Koung said it is time to review Liberia’s first five months as a non‑permanent member of the Security Council, assess progress, and identify key challenges.
It can be recalled that Liberia successfully secured a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, marking a historic diplomatic return to the world’s top body for international peace and security.
On June 3, 2025, the United Nations General Assembly elected Liberia to the seat with a landslide 181 votes and serving alongside other elected non-permanent members, including Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia.
