The Students Unification Party (SUP) has accused the Minister of Youth and Sports of scholarship deception, claiming that the Minister falsely offered scholarships to University of Liberia (UL) students despite the fact that tuition is already free. According to the campus-based student political party, the Minister claimed to offer scholarships to UL students, but the claim is false and misleading because of the free tuition policy.
Speaking during the weekend in Monrovia, the Vanguard Student Unification Party described the announcement of a 500 scholarship for students at the University of Liberia as fundamentally flawed, arguing that it lacks practical relevance in a system where undergraduate education is already tuition-free.
According to SUP, the scholarship program reflects a deeper issue of misplaced priorities within the government, with the Minister noting that young people across Liberia are still struggling with the necessary tools for the job market.
SUP noted that young people across Liberia are still struggling with the necessary tools for the job market, and that young people in rural areas are lacking basic social services to improve their skills, instead of the Minister designing programs that reflect current realities, she is parading with a deceptive pronouncement about awarding scholarships to institutions that are already free.
The group stressed that young people across Liberia are grappling with unemployment, poor infrastructure, and limited economic opportunities-challenges they say require urgent and practical interventions rather than symbolic gestures.
SUP argues that the government must shift its focus toward job creation, improved transportation for students, and better learning conditions including addressing overcrowded classrooms. They announced plans for a major protest on July 26, 2026, describing it as a continuation of their earlier “March for Jobs and Justice.” The demonstration will focus on unemployment, economic hardship, governance failures, and what it calls a widening gap between the political elite and ordinary citizens.
According to SUP, the reaffirmation of its commitment to fighting for the downtrodden masses aims to ensure that efforts are made to improve the living conditions of the people, with direct accusations against the country’s Youth and Sport Minister, whom many young people see as someone who can transform the sector. This transformation according to the students, is expected to occur through youth policies that help minimize the high rate of unemployment and engage young people across the sector.
