Women in Nyehn Town, Todee District, Lower Montserrado County, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, took center stage when an international delegation led by Plan UK paid a technical field visit to the community to directly engage beneficiaries of the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP), a major initiative aimed at improving livelihoods and economic opportunities for women.

The visit, organized by the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MGCSP) in collaboration with LWEP service providers, created a rare opportunity for local women to speak openly about how the project is affecting their lives, businesses, and families.

Residents of Nyehn Town warmly welcomed the delegation of representatives from Plan International Liberia, other LWEP service provider organizations, the Project Management Unit, Montserrado County authorities, and community leaders.  The team was formally received by the Town Chief and local authorities, signaling the importance of community ownership in development efforts. The Montserrado County Gender Coordinator outlined the objectives of LWEP in Todee District, emphasizing that the project is designed not only to provide financial support but also to build women’s confidence, skills, and resilience.

For her part, the Minister of Gender reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that women in rural communities like Nyehn Town are not left behind, stressing that meaningful development begins when citizens are actively involved in decisions that affect their lives.

During engagements with women-led enterprises and Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), beneficiaries shared testimonies of how access to savings, small loans, and business support has helped them expand petty trading, support their children’s education, and reduce household hardship.

“For the first time, we feel seen and heard. This project is helping us stand on our own feet and contribute meaningfully to our homes and community,” one beneficiary said. The delegation also held discussions on accountability and transparency, including a detailed session on the Grievance Redress Mechanism.

Community members were informed about how to raise concerns, provide feedback, and access referral pathways, particularly in cases of Gender-Based Violence. LWEP is a US$44.6 million World Bank–funded project implemented by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection through national and international partners.  The project supports the Government of Liberia’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development by promoting gender-responsive growth and strengthening the agency of women and girls.
