The Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) says it is preparing to graduate at least 500 new recruits slated for Saturday, December 7, 2024 at the Joseph Nyumah Boakai LIS Training Academy in Lofa County. Speaking Tuesday, December 3, 2024, Elijah Rufus, Acting Commissioner of the LIS said since the academy was constructed ten years ago, this was the first time it had conducted training of LIS recruits.  He said the training lasted for six weeks and focused on basic LIS operations, while thanking the Government of Liberia for fully supporting the process.

“Most of the training we have conducted have been sponsored by partnering and international partners, but this time around most of the funding came from the Government of Liberia,” he said. Acting Commissioner Rufus said the Minister of Justice Oswald Tweh will serve as guest speaker for the program, with 350 males and 150 females expected to graduate.

He said they have secured uniforms and other materials for the graduation and the Ministry of Finance and the Civil Service Agency are working out modalities to have the recruits being placed on government payroll upon their graduation.

Meanwhile, the LIS chief has cited the need for more men stationed at the borders with focus on all the land borders including ones in Grand Cape Mount, Nimba, and Maryland Counties among others. He said the LIS will  need at least 5,000 officers in order to adequately protect all borders across the nation which are important for ensuring the peace of the motherland.
